About the First Church of Christ, Scientist [See on Map] Since 1910, famed architect Bernard Maybeck's (1862-1957) spectacular Arts and Crafts-style church has stood in the heart of Berkeley. A National Historic Landmark since 1977, the building's preservation needs included a seismic upgrade of the 1929 Sunday School addition, which was funded through the Partners in Preservation grant.
