The Viking Ship stands in Geneva’s Good Templar Park as an example of the history of Norway and Chicago from the ninth and 19th centuries. Inspired by the 1880 discovery and excavation of the ancient Viking ship Gokstad, the replica was originally built in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

The stabilization of the ship, thanks to a Partners in Preservation grant, has allowed for its relocation to a more secure and permanent site, where the multi-phase conservation process can be viewed by the public.

What is the historical significance of this site?

The ship is a testament to Scandinavian technology and courage in both the ninth and 19th centuries. It also has strong bonds with Chicagoland, as the ship and its voyage from Norway were a popular attraction at the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. Following the fair, the ship was placed on public display in front of the Museum of Science and Industry for nearly seven decades.

What is the current status of the grant?

Thanks to assistance from a Partners in Preservation grant and local fundraising, Preservation Partners of Fox Valley (PPFV) was able to undertake the first step in the ship’s transformation: the steel cradle carrying the ship was modified with several new supports; a system of cables and turnbuckles was installed to carefully return the ship to its proper position; the sternpost was straightened; and over a dozen frames were added to reduce stress from the many split and cracked planks.

Although stabilization of the ship was the top priority, it was also crucial to improve security and access to the ship. This was accomplished through modifications to the enclosure, making it much more secure, and the installation of a new access ramp allowing many more visitors to view the ship – and its repairs – up close.
Since the completion of their Partners in Preservation project, the local group has gone on to found a non-profit organization dedicated to preservation of the Viking Ship.

Why this site needs your support:

The Viking Ship is a unique cultural and historical treasure. The first phase of the project is complete but the remaining phases are substantial. Fundraising efforts are on-going and the project administrators are hoping to fund the construction of the permanent museum through grants, government allocations and private contributions.
