The Power House was completed in 1905 as part of the Sears, Roebuck & Company world headquarters designed by the Chicago firm Nimmons & Fellows. Today, the Power House is part of the award-winning Homan Square redevelopment project and serves the community as the Charles H. Shaw Technology and Learning Center and the new Henry Ford Power House High School.

What is the historical significance of this site?

In 1905, Sears, Roebuck & Company constructed its massive world headquarters in Chicago's North Lawndale. The Power House served the entire complex and always represented the latest in energy generation, continually incorporating newer technologies and now providing a thorough history of energy management.

What is the current status of the grant?

Renovation and efforts to preserve the structural integrity of the iconic 185-foot radial chimney concluded in spring 2009. Installation of a chimney liner and a transparent, acrylic chimney cap allows daylight into the heart of the building and gives students access to the structure of the chimney while affording an opportunity to learn about energy efficiency.

The Homan Square Power House held a successful grand opening on August 29th highlighting the concepts of green schools, adaptive reuse of urban structures and sustainable design. Classes at the new Henry Ford Power House High School began in the fall.

Why this site needs your support:

The addition of Power House High School to the Charles H. Shaw Technology and Learning Center will play a vital role in revitalizing the historic Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago.
