The seaside Crane Estate, owned and cared for by The Trustees of Reservations, has enchanted guests and visitors for almost a century. The Estate, which is open to the public, holds a central place on the North Shore and beyond as a center of culture, recreation, and tourism. The Crane Estate was awarded a Partners in Preservation grant of $50,000 that will be used to restore the Estate’s Bowling Green, allowing more people to enjoy the picturesque estate through increased events and activities.

What is the historical significance of this site?
The Crane Estate encompasses Castle Hill, a National Historic Landmark; Crane Beach, a popular summer destination; and the Crane Wildlife Refuge, an unparalleled ecological treasure. The Estate is a quintessential American country estate representing the work of eight nationally prominent architects and landscape architects. Richard T. Crane, Jr., a Chicago industrialist, built his expansive estate – which included numerous support buildings, landscape rooms, and gardens – and crowned it with a grand mansion designed by David Adler. The Crane Estate’s allure is measured by the hundreds of thousands of visitors who now experience its grandeur annually.

What is the current and proposed use of the site?
The Bowling Green is a recessed open space offering visitors a retreat at the Crane Estate. Adjacent to the David Adler–designed Great House, it is visible to the public, but severe deterioration of walls and stairs prevents visitors from exploring it. The Crane Estate was awarded a Partners in Preservation grant of $50,000 that will restore this unique element of the estate, making it available for concerts, children's activities, lectures and sports, and enhancing the capacity of the Crane Estate to act as a model for conservation and as a gathering place for an ever broader and more diverse audience.

Why does this site need your continued support?
The Crane Estate is a nationally recognized model of conservation and The Trustees of Reservations’ exemplary stewardship of the Estate’s collection of scenic, historic, and natural features makes Crane a magical treasure for the Greater Boston community and beyond. Restoring the Bowling Green reflects a determined commitment to historic preservation and will expand the value of the entire Crane Estate as a resource to preservationists and to the community.
